What is SYLVA?

SYLVA Eumetnet sites

SYLVA supports the development of bioaerosol monitoring technologies and infrastructure across Europe.

The project aims to radically improve the temporal resolution, timeliness, coverage, and availability of information about aeroallergens and other bioaerosols by pairing technological innovations with new infrastructure, distribution, and exploitation pathways. SYLVA is testing new technologies under extreme conditions and developing AI-based solutions to provide more detailed real-time information to end users.

Explore the SYLVA demonstration pilots across Europe, real-time bioaerosol data, and a wide range of products and services for stakeholders.

What SYLVA aims to achieve?

Advanced Monitoring Technologies

SYLVA develops next-generation bioaerosol monitoring technologies for real-time observations of pollen, fungal spores, bacteria, and atmospheric bioaerosols. Instruments and AI-based identification algorithms are tested under extreme European conditions and made available through open-source datasets and tools.

ICT Infrastructure & Open Data

SYLVA creates an open and interoperable ICT infrastructure to manage large volumes of real-time bioaerosol data. The system connects monitoring networks, databases, algorithms, and environmental observing systems to provide accessible, FAIR, and standardised data services across Europe.

Demonstration Pilots Across Europe

SYLVA validates its technologies through demonstration pilots in Northern, Southern, and high-altitude regions representing diverse climatic conditions. The pilots test instrument reliability, data quality, infrastructure performance, and stakeholder usability under real-world operational conditions.

Stakeholder Impact & Services

SYLVA works closely with stakeholders from health, climate, agriculture, forestry, and environmental sectors to co-develop useful products and services. The project delivers open real-time bioaerosol information and supports the uptake of new technologies through collaboration, training, and tailored applications.

Long-Term Sustainability

SYLVA develops a long-term strategy for sustainable bioaerosol monitoring in Europe. Through collaboration with public institutions, research infrastructures, and stakeholders, the project supports the continuation and expansion of monitoring technologies and services beyond the project lifetime.
